Green Homes Grant and EPC – What we know so far

What is the Green Homes Grant Scheme?
The Green Homes Grant is a government-funded voucher scheme to help domestic customers install energy efficiency measures on their homes, helping them reduce their energy bills and their carbon emissions. Under the new scheme, the Government will fund up to two thirds of the cost of home improvements.

What can the vouchers be spent on?
Homeowners and social and private landlords will need to use their voucher to install at least one of the following, which they will receive before works commence:

1. Solid wall, under-floor, cavity wall, loft, flat roof, room in roof or park home insulation;
2. Air source or ground source heat pump or solar thermal (where the home is suitably insulated).

In addition, households can use their voucher for further energy saving measures, up to the value of 50% of the voucher (and capped at the amount of the government contribution to the primary measures). These include one or more of the following:

1. Draught proofing – which can be fitted around your doors and windows
2. New Windows and doors - Double/triple glazing (where replacing single glazing), secondary   glazing (in addition to single glazing) and energy efficient replacement doors.
3. Heating controls & insulation – including appliance thermostats, hot water tank thermostats, hot water tank insulation, smart heating controls, zone controls, delayed start thermostat, thermostatic radiator valves

Can a customer get a voucher for work already completed before the scheme started?

No - a voucher can only be issued for work to be completed under the scheme and not before. Voucher applications will be subject to the scheme's validation and audit process. In order to assess what improvement may be available, homeowners are advised to obtain an EPC as soon as possible.

When can members of the public start applying?

Later this month, homeowners across England will be able to access advice and support on improving the energy efficiency of their homes from the Simple Energy Advice service. They will assess your EPC and suggest appropriate home improvements they may be able to apply for vouchers to help fund the works.The Simple Energy Advice service will then offer households a list of approved TrustMark registered businesses including those approved via the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) in their local area to carry out the work. Once the works are agreed, vouchers will start to be issued from the end of September so work can commence.
